17 brands are registered on the portal.
Right to Repair portal has been built to provide access to affordable repair mobile phones, appliances and other electronic devices.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs (MCA), a few months back, launched a Right to Repair portal. The portal enables people across the country to get their gadgets and vehicles repaired without worrying about the warranty. The portal which is now active for users to pick their deserved service, has four sectors – consumer durables, electronic devices, automobiles, and farm equipment. On the portal, manufacturers share the manual of product details including product services, warranty, terms and conditions, etc.
Recently, the official Twitter Handle of the Department of Consumer Affairs dropped a post on X that read, “Through the ‘Right to Repair Portal’, consumers can get information related to repairs of agricultural equipment, mobile and electronics, data storage components, consumer durables and automobile equipment.”
The Right to Repair portal has been built to provide access to affordable repair mobile phones, appliances and other electronic devices. The portal, besides providing the services, also offers an affordable alternative to expensive replacements to the customers. The Department of Consumer Affairs stepped in with the decision to launch a Right to Repair framework which is based on the LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment) initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Meanwhile, the government, through the portal, wants to protect consumers against planned obsolescence. This is because a product designed with a limited life span increases e-waste. It also addressed the major concerns of the public like price, originality and warranty of spare parts. The customers will be more aware of the product as the portal also guides people about how to check the authenticity of spare parts and their origin country.
Currently, on the portal, 17 brands are registered for the customer’s convenience. The list of these brands includes companies from all four sectors – the automotive, smartphone and consumer durables industries. The brands available on the portal are Apple, Samsung, Realme, Oppo, HP, Boat, Panasonic, LG, Kent, Havells, Microtek and Luminous, among others. As far as Automobile companies are concerned, brands like Hero Motocorp and Honda Motorcycle are also registered on the portal.
